About Painting With Light

January 22, 2013 in General

20130111_122425Painting With Light is a free video mapping software application written by digital artist Alex May.

It is somewhat like any paint program you may have used (such as Paint for Windows, Adobe Photoshop, or GIMP) but designed to be used with a video projector (although you don’t need one to try it out) so instead of drawing on your computer screen, you are able to draw on the world around you.

Also unlike all other paint programs, you can immediately paint with animated video and shifting colour effects, creating vibrant and dynamic physical 3D compositions.

Download it now for Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OSX, and Ubuntu Linux 12.04

You won’t need a powerful computer or a video projector to try it out and you can draw with your mouse or laptop trackpad (although graphics tablets are supported and recommended).

This photo from a recent workshop, shows a white polystyrene head that has been painted with light and transformed into… well, we’re not sure what…

New Video Masking Tutorial

April 14, 2013 in General

PaintingWithLight-Masking-11I’ve written a new tutorial that explains how to do basic video masking in Painting With Light.

Version 1.0.3 is still under development, although this is a bit slow at the moment as I’m preparing to use it at a rather exciting event at the end of the month.

Please continue to send me any suggestions or bugs you might encounter in the mean time.

Fluxmedia Concordia Workshop in Montreal, Cananda

February 13, 2013 in Workshops

Last week I was in Montreal with Anna Dumitriu running a workshop on mapping bacteria.  Along with the workshop participants, we swabbed parts of the room we were working in, and then inoculated Petri dishes filled with home-made agar and cloth and natural antibiotics such as cloves and turmeric.  A couple of days later, we put the dishes under a microscope and looked for bacteria, which we found plenty of.  On the last day we used Painting With Light to map video of the bacteria back onto parts of the room where we had originally swabbed from.

Bezier Curves and Open Sound Control

Development continues on version 1.0.3 which has some major new features.

Bézier Curves for quickly drawing smooth masks.

Open Sound Control for controlling parts of the program with other software and hardware.  I’ve had it working with TouchOSC running on an Android Nexus 7.

A custom DXT Video format for the most CPU friendly video decompression.

Version 1.0.3 will be released sometime mid-February as I’m off to Montreal for a week on Sunday.

PaintingWithLight-1.0.2-Ubuntu

Spent some time trying to package Painting With Light for Ubuntu into a more system friendly format.

The result is a .deb package rather than an archive of the dependencies.

To install, download version 1.0.2, open a Terminal and type the following:

cd <where you downloaded the file>
sudo dpkg -i PaintingWithLight-1.0.2.deb
sudo apt-get install -f

Painting With Light – Version 1.0.2

PaintingWithLight 1.0.2

PaintingWithLight 1.0.2

Painting With Light version 1.0.2 is now available for download.

Version 1.0.2 for Windows

Version 1.0.2 for OSX (10.5+)

Version 1.0.2 for Ubuntu (12.04+) (coming soon!)

This version comes with the often requested feature of being able to see what you’re drawing in both the output and work area windows.

The Windows version also has a new Video Input plugin that allows you to use live video from your video camera as a texture source for your paintings.  Sadly it isn’t available for OSX yet because apparently Apple doesn’t like software written in certain programming languages accessing the camera so another solution is currently being sought.

It also has a simplified plugin installation system and many behind the scenes improvements.

The Ubuntu 1.0.2 version is undergoing additional testing and will be available for download soon and should support the Video Input plugin just fine.

Please leave any feedback you have about the new version in the forum.

Painting With Light video sculpture at blinc digital arts festival

November 6, 2012 in General

An improvised and participatory site specific installation created from found objects and multiple elements of collected video footage, combined using the artist’s own custom video mapping software “Painting With Light”, using a single video projector.

The installation was created over two days at the blinc digital arts festival in Conwy, Wales in October 2012.
